If you've completed your Home Care Aide (HCA) training and are ready to become certified in Washington State, the next step is passing the HCA certification exam. While the registration process can seem confusing, it doesn't have to be.
At Sparkle Training Center, we help students from all approved training programs successfully register and complete their Washington State HCA exam. Whether you trained with us or another school, this guide will walk you through the registration process from start to finish.
Why the HCA Exam Matters
The Home Care Aide Certification Exam is required by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) before you can become a certified Home Care Aide. The exam evaluates both your caregiving knowledge and hands-on skills to ensure you're prepared to provide safe, quality care to clients.
Before You Register
Before scheduling your exam, make sure you have completed your required 75-hour Home Care Aide training program and received your completion certificate. Sparkle Training Center requires proof of completed training before you can take the exam.
Step 1: Apply for Your HCA License Through the Washington State Department of Health
Before registering for the exam, you must apply for your Home Care Aide credential through the Washington State Department of Health.
How to Apply
Create or log into your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account.
Add the Health Professional and Facility Licensing (HELMS) service.
Select Home Care Aide Certification.
Complete the application.
Pay the Department of Health application fee.
After your application is processed, you'll receive a pending credential number (often called your HM number), which you'll need to register for your exam.
Step 2: Select the Correct Testing Site Option
Washington State recently updated the testing process, and Sparkle Training Center is no longer affiliated with Prometric as a regional testing center. Candidates testing with Sparkle should select:
"In Facility Site – my employer or training program is scheduling my testing, and I will take my exams at their facility."
When prompted, use the Sparkle Training Center testing site code:
ARISESPARK
Testing Location
Sparkle Training Center220 E. Wellesley Ave., Suite 201Spokane, WA 99207
Step 3: Complete Your Exam Registration
Once you have received your pending credential number, you're ready to register for your exam.
To complete registration:
Submit the Sparkle Training Center exam registration form.
Verify your personal information.
Provide your pending credential number.
Pay the exam fee.
Current HCA exam fee: $150.
What to Expect on Exam Day
The Washington State HCA exam includes two parts:
Knowledge Exam
The written portion includes 60 questions and covers topics learned during your Home Care Aide training. Questions may include true/false items, pictures, and scenario-based questions. Candidates have up to 90 minutes to complete this section.
Skills Exam
The skills evaluation requires candidates to demonstrate caregiving tasks in front of an evaluator. These hands-on skills reflect real-world caregiving responsibilities and are designed to ensure competency in client care.
You must successfully complete both portions to earn your Washington State Home Care Aide certification.
Common Registration Mistakes to Avoid
Many candidates experience delays because of simple registration errors. Before scheduling your exam, double-check that:
Your 75-hour training certificate has been completed.
Your Department of Health application has been submitted.
You have received your pending credential number.
You selected the correct testing site option.
Your personal information matches your identification documents.
Taking a few extra minutes to verify these details can help you avoid unnecessary delays.
